We are going to examine a variety of oopsies MANY developers fall prey to – some obvious, some pretty subtle and some down right sneaky! Lots of code examples with the bad AND good code presented. I GUARANTEE that you will find things here that will either prevent you from getting bad data, throwing unwanted errors or vastly improving your database application's performance and concurrency.  I have given this talk over FIFTY times now and it is always very highly rated!

Kevin Boles bio:
Kevin is a SQL Server expert, working exclusively with the product since v6.5. With over 20 years of database experience and almost 45,000 man hours of SQL Server engine experience, he holds many related certifications, is an MCT and was a SQL Server MVP from 2007 to 2012. He has been a very successful independent consultant for over 15 years. Kevin is also a very frequent speaker, having presented at countless User Groups and over 75 SQL Saturday conferences! His passion is the relational engine, especially designing, building, analyzing and tuning high-performance database applications.

All you should know about waits (400)
As it is my first appearance in Sweden I would like to discuss with you the internals of the SQL Server – The Waits.  As we all know the understanding internals a little bit is important even if we do not / do not have to /  debug the SQL Server. I would like to present vital information of the scheduling model and introduce the concept of wait. Then I would like to show you that it is a sometimes a hard work to find the root cause of a wait. I will explain why should we care / not care / about specific wait types
For sure I will find time to demystify some popular myths – for example about the CXPACKET wait. 
I would not like this session to be a boring lecture with a lot of slides (but I will have some, I promise) so be prepared to see a lot of code in action.

Software engineer with 10+ years of professional experience in all aspects of software development.
Damian participated in a number of projects in international environments and possesses practical knowledge of procedures and tools which are necessary for successful implementation of such projects.
Now he focuses on building solutions based on Microsoft SQL Server environment (including complex database driven systems, database administering, tuning and optimization).
Damian is experienced speaker and columnist. Damian holds various Microsoft Certifications: he is a Microsoft Certified Trainer, Solution Developer or .NET and Database Administrator from 2004. He now is also an MCSE of Data Platform. Describes himself as an energetic actor.

DAX FROM THE FIELD: REAL-WORLD CASE STUDIES

The Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) formula language is still relatively new to many BI practitioners. But with more than 4 years under its belt now, it is proving its value every day – including in large installations that push the xVelocity in-memory engine to its limit. In this session, we will dive into lessons from the field, where real customers are using DAX to solve complex problems well beyond the Adventure Works scenarios.

 

How do you make a database fit in memory if it doesn’t fit? How do you handle billions of rows with a complex calculation? Can you perform reporting in any time zone, with time intelligence, efficiently? What tools can you use to benchmark and choose the right hardware? How do you scale up performance on both small and large databases? What are the common mistakes in DAX formulas that might cause performance bottlenecks?

 

These are just a few questions we will answer by looking at best practices that are working for real customers. Don’t miss this session to learn efficient DAX solutions and how far you can push the limits of the system.

 

Alberto Ferrari bio:

Alberto Ferrari is a Business Intelligence consultant based in Italy. His competency ranges over the whole Microsoft BI stack: SSIS, SSAS, PowerPivot, Data Modeling.

His main interests are in BI development lifecycle methodologies and in the data modeling and performance tuning of large BI solutions, ranging from the ETL phase up to the most intricate MDX and DAX code development.

He worked for many software houses, helping them to take important decisions about the data model for complex data warehouse and for end users in the banking, manufacturing and statistical sectors.

He is also a speaker in international conferences like PASS, SqlBits, TechEd and a book author, having coauthored ”Expert Cube Development with SSAS 2008” and ”Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel 2010: Give Your Data Meaning”. He is a certified SSAS Maestro and has been awarded MVP.
